How to create discounts and promo codes

What this is

In NINEMAGS Pages you can offer your shoppers deals — either as promo codes they enter in the cart, or as automatic discounts that apply on their own. Each discount has a type (how much comes off) and a trigger (how it's applied).

You can also schedule discounts, set a minimum order amount, stack them, and choose how they're shown across your store.

Where to find it

  1. Open NINEMAGS Pages.
  2. In the left menu, click Discounts.
  3. Click Create discount — the form opens.

Here you can see all your discounts. Click an existing one to edit it.

Creating a discount — the form fields

Go through the form top to bottom.

Name (required) — an internal name for the discount. You see it, the shopper doesn't. For example: "Black Friday 2025", "Subscriber discount".

Trigger — how the shopper gets the discount:

  • Promo code — the shopper enters the code in the cart themselves.
  • Automatic — applies on its own to every eligible cart.

Code (only for Promo code, required) — the code the shopper will enter. For example, SUMMER20  or WELCOME10 .

Type — the discount type:

  • Percentage off — a percentage off the order (for example, 20%).
  • Fixed amount off — a set amount off (for example, $5).
  • Free shipping — removes the shipping cost.

Percentage (%) / Amount ($) (required) — the value of the discount. The field changes depending on the type: for Percentage off it's a percentage field, for Fixed amount off it's a dollar field. For Free shipping there's no such field.

Minimum order subtotal ($) — the minimum cart amount needed for the discount to apply. Leave blank for no minimum.

Starts at / Ends at — start and end dates. Leave either field blank for no limit.

Stack with automatic discounts (only for promo codes) — whether this promo code stacks with automatic discounts. More on this below.

Active — turns the discount on or off without deleting it. On by default.

Click Create to save.

A note on free shipping

A free-shipping discount always applies alongside a value discount — the two never cancel each other out. That means a shopper can have both a percentage (or fixed-amount) discount and free shipping at the same time.

How the discount shows up in your store (automatic only)

If your discount is automatic and has no minimum, you can show it beyond the cart — directly on your storefront. There are three options:

  • None (cart only) — the discount still applies, but prices look normal until checkout.
  • Product prices — every product shows its sale price with the original struck through.
  • Order banner — a banner announces the deal at the top of your shop; individual product prices stay the same.

A note on fixed-amount sales: a "$5 off" only comes off once at checkout, so showing it on every product can look like a bigger saving than the shopper actually gets. For fixed-amount deals, the order banner is usually clearer.

Stacking with automatic discounts

When you create a promo code, the Stack with automatic discounts switch in the form decides whether it stacks with an automatic discount.

  • Off (default) — the code replaces the automatic discount; the shopper gets whichever one applies, not both.
  • On — the code stacks on top of the automatic discount. They combine in order: the automatic discount comes off first, then the code applies to what's left.

For example: a $100 cart with an automatic 20% off drops to $80; then a stacking 10% code takes $8 off that — $28 off in total (not $30).

Discount statuses

Each discount in your table has a status, so you can see at a glance what's happening:

  • Active — live and applying now.
  • Scheduled — starts on a future date.
  • Expired — its end date has passed.
  • Off — Active is switched off.

What your customers see

  • Promo codes are entered in the cart. Each applied discount shows as its own line, and the estimated total updates as they go.
  • Free shipping shows as Free on the shipping line.
  • Store-wide automatic discounts appear on product listings as a sale price or a banner, depending on the option you picked.
  • The final price is always confirmed at checkout.
